Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a manual medicine that is built on the important link between the structure of the body and the way it functions. Osteopaths have a skilled understanding of how the body functions as a whole. They may assess and treat many areas across the body from the skeleton, muscles, fascia and joints to nerve pathways, the circulatory system or internal organs.

Osteopathic treatment may vary from massage, stretching, mobilisation, articulation or manipulation. It may incorporate other techniques you might be less familiar with such as muscle energy technique, balanced ligamentous tension, myofascial release, or cranial osteopathy. Exercise prescription will often form part of your treatment.

Some people are better suited to techniques that are very gentle while others may prefer a stronger style of treatment including joint manipulation. Your osteopath will work with you to deliver the best treatment approach that best suits your needs.

Osteopaths are registered health professionals in New Zealand and work with other health providers including general practitioners, specialists and radiologists to provide the best service to their patients.

APPOINTMENT LENGTH

Please allow up to 40 minutes for your consultation.

WHAT TO BRING

Please bring any X-rays, scans or test results that you have related to your injury. This will help us understand your condition better. If you have a referral letter from your GP, specialist, physiotherapist or trainer, bring that too.

ACC

If your injury is the result of an accident a new ACC claim can be lodged when you come to see us. You don’t need a GP referral. If you already have an existing claim, please bring any ACC details with you when you arrive.

WHAT TO WEAR

It is important you feel comfortable during your treatment, so wear relaxed clothing you can easily move in. You may like to bring exercise pants or a pair of shorts to change into. It may be necessary for your treatment and correct diagnosis for the osteopath to ask you to change down to your underwear. We will always work within your comfort zone so if this is not suitable for you please let your osteopath know.
